OEM & private label foam furniture for global brands

B2B sourcing answers

Compression sofa FAQ for decisions before the purchase order.

Product names can sound simple while construction, evidence and commercial conditions remain model-specific. These answers help brands, importers and retailers prepare a clearer conversation with a foam furniture manufacturer.

How to use this guide

Begin with the category, finish with your specification.

Each answer explains the general sourcing principle and links to a more detailed page where useful. It does not replace a drawing, sample, test plan, certificate review, quotation or purchase agreement for a specific product.

If your question contains a number—MOQ, recovery time, carton size, compression ratio, price or lead time—expect the answer to depend on construction, materials, quantity and project conditions.

Topic 01

Product and construction basics

Start by separating how a sofa is built from how it is packed.

What is a compression sofa?

A compression sofa is foam-led seating developed for reduced-volume packing and recovery after opening. The category can include one-piece sofas, modules, chairs and selected convertible forms. Suitability depends on the approved foam, shape, cover, protection, packaging orientation and recovery criteria. Read the compression sofa sourcing guide.

What is the difference between a compression sofa and a boneless sofa?

Compression sofa describes packaging capability. Boneless sofa describes frame-free or largely full-foam construction. The terms can overlap, but they are not synonyms: a boneless sofa still needs a model-specific trial before reduced-volume packing is approved, and a compression-ready product may contain selected non-foam components.

Can every foam sofa be vacuum packed?

No. Foam type and layer position, component geometry, bonding, upholstery backing, seams, closures, accessories and any hard or delicate areas influence suitability. A trial with the exact construction establishes whether the proposed packing method protects recovery, appearance and function.

Terminology check

Names describe a direction, not a complete specification.

“Full foam,” “boneless,” “modular” and “vacuum packed” help buyers find a category. None defines density, firmness, dimensions, load behavior, upholstery, carton or compliance. A useful RFQ translates the category into measurable product and market requirements.

Topic 02

OEM development and ordering

The quotation becomes more reliable as assumptions become visible.

What can be customized for an OEM sofa?

Projects may define overall dimensions, configurations, foam construction, comfort direction, edge profile, upholstery, color, seam map, removable-cover details, labels, instructions and retail cartons. Availability, material minimums, testing and packaging suitability are reviewed before approval.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide the buyer company, destination, authorized drawings or references, product dimensions, expected quantity by model and color, fabric direction, packaging limits, test requirements, trade terms and timing. Mark unknown items as open decisions rather than asking the supplier to hide them inside a price.

What is the MOQ for a custom sofa?

There is no responsible universal MOQ. Finished-product quantity can be influenced by foam conversion, fabric and color minimums, custom labels, printed cartons, testing, production scheduling and order conditions. MOQ is confirmed after the complete brief is reviewed.

How is a custom sofa sample approved?

The buyer and manufacturer compare construction, dimensions, sitting response, upholstery, appearance, function, labels and packaging with written requirements. An identified golden sample, controlled documents and written approval create the production reference. Later changes require revision review.

Topic 03

Vacuum compression and recovery

A reduced carton must not become an unsupported product promise.

How long does a compressed sofa take to recover?

There is no universal time. Foam construction, product thickness, upholstery, packing pressure, fold orientation, storage duration, temperature and the selected acceptance criteria affect observations. Instructions should reflect trials on the approved model under documented conditions.

How much can the carton volume be reduced?

The achievable package is determined through trial packing. Buyers should use final external carton dimensions, gross weight and actual loading rules for calculations. A theoretical percentage from another sofa does not prove recovery or usable container quantity for the current design.

What must be approved before mass packing?

Approve pre-pack product condition, orientation, bag, protection, pressure or containment method, carton, labels, instructions, hold conditions, opening method and recovery checks. Changes to foam, fabric, dimensions or included components may require the trial to be revisited.

Packaging evidence

Review what the customer will receive.

A pack-out approval covers identification, physical protection and opening information. Selected units may be opened to review shape, dimensions, cover condition, seams and function at defined intervals.

Topic 04

Quality, testing and documents

Different forms of evidence answer different questions.

How is compression furniture quality checked?

The control plan can include requirement review, incoming material identity, first-piece approval, foam and sewing checkpoints, finished-product inspection, packaging checks and a defined recovery review. Sampling, measurements and acceptance criteria are agreed for the model and order.

Does factory inspection replace laboratory testing?

No. Inspection compares sampled production with order requirements at a point in time. Laboratory testing applies a named method, equipment and conditions to identified samples. A certificate or declaration has another scope again. Buyers may require more than one evidence type.

Which certification documents are available?

FSC, two CE documents and REACH documentation are recorded as available for review. Do not rely on a logo alone. Check issuer, number, validity, legal entity, site, material or product coverage and destination relevance. Retailer or product testing may add requirements.

Can buyers arrange a factory visit or third-party inspection?

A visit or authorized third-party inspection can be discussed. Confirm agency or attendees, date, product scope, access, photography, confidentiality, sampling, acceptance criteria and cost responsibility in advance. Review the factory information before planning travel.

Topic 05

Modular, children's and outdoor formats

Additional claims create additional specification and evidence needs.

How should modular sofas be specified?

List every module and orientation, priority configurations, shared reference dimensions, loaded height alignment, seam relationships, movement or connection approach, SKU identity and carton map. Approve individual modules and the important complete layouts.

Is a foam sofa automatically safe for children?

No. Softness alone does not establish safety. Intended age, dimensions, complete construction, materials, closures, labels, packaging and destination requirements need review. Any child-user evaluation should be appropriately planned and supervised by responsible parties.

Can an outdoor compression sofa be waterproof?

Water-resistant upholstery does not make a complete sofa waterproof. Roof cover, sunlight, rain, humidity, seams, closures, foam, drainage, base contact, care and storage all matter. Strong weather claims require applicable evidence for the exact construction and exposure.
